033 Why all the labels?

033 Why all the labels?

Read Time: 2 minutes

As a photographer these days it seems that everyone feels the need to label their art, and themselves. Are you a landscape photographer, street photographer, or wedding photographer? Why do we insist on labeling everything?

Lenswork episode #1166 – I Am a Photographer

Brooks talks about how telling someone that he is a photographer often leads to them assuming he does one specific style of photography or another.

Discussion on Twitter with James Tarry

We talked about street photography and where the line is between that and documentary or photojournalism.

  1. Yup. The ONLY reason for a label in my opinion is when it comes to invoicing clients.
I’ve “labeled” myself as a “digital content creator” because it’s not just photography or specific photography I shoot or get paid for. There’s also the articles I’ve been paid to write. There’s also the social media videos I’ve been paid to shoot and edit.
    Good question and discussion.
